Okera Design Team Methodology on User Experience and Ease of Use

On behalf of the Okera UX Design team I am excited to share a bit about our process and details behind our strategy for the new homepage. At Okera, we believe It’s essential to empathize with our users. We strive to ensure that our application is clear and intuitive. That’s why one of our focus areas is the onboarding process. Our goal is to help new users get comfortable with the Okera platform as quickly and easily as possible so they can achieve their goals and assign data access.

We like to think about our onboarding as though we are giving users a gas pedal that accelerates them from idling to smoothly cruising through our software with ease. We’re calling this initiative “0-60,” not just because we like a good driving analogy, but because we care about creating fast, efficient and reliable experiences for all of our users. So, hop in and we’ll show you how we’ve done just that.

First, in the discovery phase of work, we identified pain points and areas of complexity that may prevent or slow users’ progress toward completing their goals. We wanted to make best practices easy to adopt, create a clear order of operations and ensure that users know how to find answers to any questions that might arise.

Next, we identified the Okera application homepage as the perfect place for explaining best practices. We went through many rounds of iteration to organize tasks into three manageable and logical steps:

  1. Create your data classification system
  2. Register your data
  3. Assign access to data

After Our Improved Okera Dynamic Access Platform Homepage Changes

Okera Dashboard After UI/UX improvements, As users accelerate towards the final step of providing fine grained data access, they’ll receive feedback that shows their progress. As they create tags, connections or other objects, for example, they will start to see those objects populate on the homepage. Furthermore, sections are curated per user-role, so only users with the proper permissions will be able to see them.  After users are fully onboarded, the homepage will continue to provide value through its quick actions. The new homepage layout will also act as a reminder of the Okera application workflow. It will also give users an overview of objects accessed most recently.

In addition to explaining tasks sequentially, we surfaced the ability to complete those tasks directly from the home page. If the brevity of these explanations leaves out any details, or unanswered questions, users can navigate directly to Okera’s detailed documentation by clicking “Learn more.”

What’s next in Simplifying User Experiences for the Okera Dynamic Access Platform

Looking ahead, we have some additional roadmap items relating to the “0-60” onboarding initiative to further assist in onboarding new users. These include simplifying the navigation between the pages offering and the ability to see what data the user can access and which permissions influence that access.
